Esta vez hablamos un poco del pretérito o lo que se llama <<perfect>> en íngles. El pretérito se usa para describir eventos en el pasado que solo pasó una vez o que pasó mientras que hacías otra cosa.

This time we spoke a bit about the Preterite, or what is called the Perfect form in English (according to Erin anyway). It is used to describe events in the past that only happened one time, in a definite amount of time, or while doing something else that was longer...

For example:

• Me desperté (I woke up) Me cepillé los dientes (I brushed my teeth) Me desayuné (I ate breakfast) Fui a la clase de español

All of this is different from actions that you continually did in the past... If you went to class every day at 8am you would say: iba a la clase de español todos los días a las ocho en la mañana.

Preterite endings

<verbatim> -ar -er,ir yo é í tú aste iste él, ella, Ud. ó ió nosotros amos imos ellos aron ieron </verbatim>

Example

• Conocer-to be familiar with, know. Escribir-to write. Andar-to walk.

<verbatim> yo conocí escribí andé tú conociste escribiste andaste él, ella, Ud. conoció escribió andó nosotros conocimos escribimos andamos ellos conocieron escribieron andaron </verbatim>

<verbatim>Imperfect endings -ar verbs -er, ir verbs (of which there are many irregular!)

yo aba ía tú abas ías él, ella, Ud. aba ía nosotros ábamos íamos ellos aban ían

Example Conocer Escribir Andar yo conocía escribía andaba tú conocías escribías andabas él, ella, Ud. conocía escribía andaba nosotros conocíamos escribíamos andabamos ellos conocían escribían andaban </verbatim>
