From Charlie:
Sorry about the lateness, but here are the minutes from last week's meeting.
In attendance: Anthony, Johnathan P., John N., Thomas, Blake, Brenda, Chris, Don, Jennifer, Charlie, Stevie, Laura, Claire, Alexis
1. DIY Festival The festival will be held on April 13. There will be a concerted effort to try to reach out to the hip hop genre as well as an effort to reach out to disabled people Workshops/tables so far include:
- Panel of coops, collectives - Indymedia, Gillman, Slingshot, Nabalon Bakery, some Warehouse in Oakland..
- Barrington Hall (as in the defunct coop) kiosk
- Spoken word, bands (with separate venues for loud/quiet), Breakdancing, Drum Circle, Punk Rock Soccer
To pull this off, we need:
People to come up with workshop ideas! Talk to us! (discuss@barringtoncollective.org)
- People to get involved with planning, setup.
- tasks will be announced by this list, and people should take them up.
- REMEMBER: You can do as much or as little as you want. It's alright to get involved just to do 1 little thing, it is still good that the 1 little thing got done, and better yet that you aren't roped into something you don't have the energy for. But if you want to lead a huge thing, DO IT!
DETAILS ON WORKSHOPS/TABLES NEED TO BE SOLIDIFIED WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK.
2. Bake Sale $ We made 44 dollars at our bake sale! The meeting decided to distribute 5 dollars to each currently active group, and to keep a small amount for the collective to make copies for itself.
We discussed the possibilities of a bar-b-q, and decided that legal problems with food sale would be exponentiated by such a public display. We decided that Thomas would keep track of the money right now since he is working with finances, and decided that it is important that we find a replacement for Thomas around April when he is going to soon disappear. We love Freshmen!
3. Art Show - April 6th @ Gillman The theme will be "State of the Union".
Tell everyone you know to submit art and to go to the show! We are looking into having music and food-not-bombs at the event. -Helpers needed for setup, breakdown.
4. Accoustic Night -The third Johnathan (Johnathan Bell) from CZ wants to do an Acoustic night.
- It will have a political bent.
- Medium size event.
Time is discussed at length and not consented to, we need to determine when the event will be. Anyone interested in participating and helping out this event, talk to Stevie, Johnathan Bell, and/or discuss@barringtoncollective.org. 5. BC Outreach We discussed different ways of making flyering more effective. Some suggestions include:
- Getting individuals in each big venue (house, organization) that is sympathetic and can distribute fliers internally if we get it to them
- Flyer events like Robotmedia (though unfortunately it was Saturday and noone flyered there...)
We decided to have a fun thing called "Flyer Friday," where we get together and flyer for fun. For details, see Thomas. We also decided to have 'flyering central locales," namely Kingman on northside and Fenwick on southside, and we can flyer from there to other places.
We have a copy machine now (which may or may not have toner by now), it lives at Kingman. Use it! Talk to Stevie or Chris.
6. Workshops
- Last night was Wendy-O Matic with Responsible Non-Monogamy. Anyone go?
- The Commemoration Committee for the Black Panther Party, location and time TBA.
- CRS Gardening Workshops in April - talk to Johnathan Pilch for more
We brainstormed for more ideas for possible workshops (any takers?)... Coop talk thing (as in about coops), T-shirt decorating, Alkaline photoshop workshop
7. We are Old, Father Williams Just for informational purposes, those NOT graduating in May at the meeting are: Chris, Ingrid, Kathryn, Johnathan Pilch, Brenda. (WE LOVE FRESHMEN!!)
8. Scoop
- The scoop is dead. (For those who don't know, it is a formerly independent coop newsletter that was coopted by the USCA, and went utterly downhill since then, and just got its funding cut.)
- The USCA now has a grant fund of $500 a semester (starting next fall) which we could potentially get a piece of for Zine publication.
Woohoo! GO BC!
