so whatever. i took like 4 months of German sometime in highschool. i don't even know if i spelled the subject correctly. enschuldegen Sie bitte... Fuck you...
we touched on a lot of things last night, and I am admittedly the worst notetaker ever. i figured i'd have to suck it up and do it sometime. pardon my paraphrasing... (fuck you)
minutes for the Barrington Collective meeting, October 27th, 8:30 pm (post daylight savings)
members present: Jameel, Krista, Zoe, Thomas, Anthony, Stevie, your mom...
(Ben not present, Jameel facilitated)
check-in: we said how we were doing, and reported back on whatever progress
we'd made on recruitment, event organizing, and formation of subgroups-
Co-op discussion group-
JAMEEL is getting this started. it will be taking place on Mondays, probably at Davis. he is going to their council early this week to okay the usage of their space.
Gardening group-
TABLED for the semester. plants are dying. there is no point. life is meaningless...
Wymyn's group-
Krista/Alexis both too busy to spearhead it. Krista will talk to femme sexer JAIME and SIGAL from Lothlórien about spearheading it. we realized that Barr Coll members don't need to be the ones to start up subgroups. passing it onto other people w/ energy is a great idea.
Writers' Bloc-
- is underway. off campus writers are intersted in
it too, like WALKER, a writer/zinester from Oakland. possible BarrColl zine in the near future. talk to MATT/STEVIE. we'll be organizing writing parties like the art parites (see below) and workshops semi- regularly.
(events)
Colombia teach-in. discussed maybe scaling it down and just having a speaker (Camilo from Colobia Support Network "CSN") and two videos screened in stead of ALSO having a band. also talk of doing the aforementioned as one event, and then having a separate event of just bands and a benefit show. STEVIE is going to the CSN/SOJA meeting this wednessday to co-organize this. if you want to participate the mtg will be in 262 dwinelle on Wed at 7:15pm.
DIY festival-
MATT has been talking to an artist from Palo Alto for the panel. STEVIE is getting in touch w/ a writer named Sasha (Bay Gardian/ zine writer) and a dancer named Ally (founder of Art & Revolution). Also possibly José from the band Yaphet Kotto (east bay). keep you eyes pealed for independent artists, and career people, and keep in mind that we want a diverse panel both in terms of what they do, and also gender/ethnicity. For workshops, now is the time to recruit people to do larger workshops (45 min- 1hr long) and to do booths (tables) for the swap-meet/ mini-demo (workshop) room. ie, if you know people who make their own crafts or have neat skills (sewing machines etc) tell about what we're doing and see if they can run a table for a short time. if you are unclear as to what the event is send an email to the group. i won't get into it now. the date is set for NOVEMBER 23rd! mark your calendars. This is one of those events that we should begin announcing at our own house councils/ apts/ and non-USCA abodes. talk to STEVIE, MATT, ALEXIS, or... (shit there wassomeone else. if it is you let us know...) if you're interested.
phone lists
(as complete as we can muster for right now) will be emailed out by THOMAS before the end of the week. we will start having regular meetings on the alternate sundays (when the Collective does not have general mtgs.) we can have them at Alexis's apt in Fenwick, or at loth. whatever. we should decide this before our mtg on this sun, the 3rd...
NEW IDEAS
(events)
World Summit reportbacks. co-opers who went to the Rio +10 conference in So. Africa and the Bioneers conference in Marin can to a teach-in on what went down. STEVIE is gonna organize this with DAVE, ORON, and YOGI from Lothlórien. if you know anyone else who has done shit like this get in touch w/ stevie. there was also talk of regularly running reportbacks from events as needed. ie a NASCO report back event etc.
(groups)
THOMAS und STEVIE are starting an Anarchist reading/discussion group. They will be Thursday nights at Chateau (main house?) starting nov 7th (next thurs after All Hallow's Eve). ERIC HETZNER (sic) was suggested as aperson to contact about this.
(group/event combos)
ART-
ANTHONY from Chateau is has been organizing spontaneous Art shows. there will be a big one at the 'TEAU in the first week of December. He's also into starting an art group to have art parties among all co-opers, instead of just in-house ones that happen all over the USCA these days. If you know kids interested in doing art shows/ performances (co-opers or not) let ANTHONY know.
FILM-
ZOE is predominantly interested in doing film aspects of other events, rather than just film events. another idea was to make projects that people are doing into films (documentary style). BUT WAIT, film group may do film showcases/screeings of amazing, but little known films. (fuck yeah!). Talk to ZOE if you know of films that everyone should see, but nobody knows about. if you know film dorks who know of shit like this, talk to ZOE. (btw Zoe, Keith would be really into this).Bu-bu-bu-but, wait it gets worse... film group to set up an outdoor screening area in Rochdale/Fenwick like they had years ago. collaboration w/ RobotMedia on this and other projects. idea of a BarrColl video library which could be a) a collection of co-op videos like the "Cloynarchy" video, or the 80 min long Chateau film from years ago or b) a USCA-wide library of videos to borrow (in lieu of going to Reel, or blockbuster). people could donate movies they no longer want and we could station a library at a co-op, or in the film guru's co-op room. ZOE will announce the up-starting BarrColl film group at the next robot media showcase, and will call for submissions of obscure films for an obscure film screening as an event.
- KEY PROJECT- in order to get shit rolling we need to establish our website
w/ an announcment board and a message board. this will be the best medium for co-opers and community participants to get involved or simply show up to our events. ZOE is going to do this w/ MIKE MANZO. she is contacting him by this weekend. she will do the aesthetics and he will do the technical stuff.
we will also start having regular council announcements in the next week or two. so if you have a set time for your fledgling groups tell the group so we can annce it at house councils. also, anncmt flyers can be copied cheaply, if you get them to STEVIE or his mailbox by thurday nights.(copy central hook-ups!!)
FROM NOW ON IT WILL BE THE NOTETAKER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SEND OUT AN ADDITIONAL EMAIL OF PERTINENT ANNOUNCMENTS FOR THE WEEK.
that was basically the main substance of the mtg. we had more discussions over the role and function of the Barrington Collective as a pooling of resources and a consolidation of advertising/ group of pple to make outreach announcments. long discussion short, we are a collective of organizations, much like how Board (CO) is a central Council of smaller house Councils, we faciliate communicate and streamline the organizing taking place in subgroups.
we had more disc about how we are not an organization, but a collective, and so, once established, our meetings will be MUUUUUUUCH shorter b/c it will basically just be the 'check in' portion of the mtg. most of the nitty gritty stuff will be taken care of by the subgroups. in a sense, we've put the cart before the horse. the collective before the organizations. this will take a few weeks (or this semester...) to work the kinks out of. but we're basically picking up all of the slack for a collective that should have been started a while ago...
there was more said about the anit-loth sentiment of event hosting and about attendance (!!!), and about pressure for people to volunteer to spearhead shit, even when they're busy, but i have class now, and i'll let you know more about that later. on a personal level.
in all, it was a tough mtg, but we got through a lot of shit that needed to be brought up. so go us!
hugs all around, Stevie 883-9077
